Monção is much more than the land of Alvarinho. Nestled against the Minho river and facing Galicia, this border town in the Alto Minho holds medieval walls, palaces, thermal springs, heroic legends and some of the most beautiful landscapes in northern Portugal. 1. Monção's Walls and Historic Centre

The heart of Monção is its walled historic centre, dating back to medieval times. From the old fortifications ordered by King Dinis, sections of the wall and two emblematic gates survive: the Porta do Salvado and the Porta do Sol, the latter facing the river and neighbouring Salvaterra de Miño in Spain. Wandering the granite lanes, with their coat-of-arms houses, flower-filled balconies and little squares, is the best way to start getting to know the town.

2. Praça Deu-la-Deu and the Legend that Saved Monção

Few Portuguese towns have a heroine like Deu-la-Deu Martins. During the Castilian siege of 1368, with the town starving and on the verge of surrender, Deu-la-Deu had bread baked with the little flour that remained and threw it from the top of the walls to the besiegers, shouting that God had given so much that it could even be thrown away. Convinced that the siege could never overcome such abundance, the Castilians broke camp. Monção's main square bears her name and a statue recalls the deed, an essential stop to understand the soul of the town.

3. Monção Parish Church

The Igreja Matriz, of Romanesque origin, is one of the oldest buildings in town. Despite the changes it has undergone over the centuries, it preserves the portal and medieval elements that bear witness to Monção's importance in the Middle Ages. It's well worth stepping inside, taking in the interior and feeling the silence of eight centuries of history.

4. Palácio da Brejoeira

Just a few minutes from the centre, in the parish of Pinheiros, stands one of the most beautiful neoclassical palaces in Portugal. Built in the 19th century, the Palácio da Brejoeira is today also a prestigious Alvarinho-producing estate. You can visit the gardens, the chapel and the cellars, finishing with a tasting of the wine born here. For wine lovers, it's the perfect gateway to the wine tourism route in Monção.

5. Monção Thermal Spa and Parque das Caldas

The Caldas de Monção have been famous since the 19th century for their mineral waters. Today, the Termas de Monção offer health and wellness programmes within the Parque das Caldas, a spacious wooded park ideal for gentle strolls, picnics and family afternoons. 6. Alvarinho Museum

Monção and Melgaço form the Alvarinho's sub-region of excellence, and the Alvarinho Museum, in the historic centre, tells that story: the grape variety, the growing methods, the harvest and the soul of Portugal's most celebrated vinho verde. A short, free (or nearly free) visit that enriches any wine tasting you do afterwards.

7. The Minho Riverside and Ecovia

Monção lives facing the Minho. The riverside area invites you to take an early-evening walk, with the Galician landscape of Salvaterra de Miño on the far bank. The Ecovia do Minho lets you follow the riverbank on foot or by bike, among vineyards, maize fields and riverside woodland, a serene way to absorb the landscape that, further up, our buggies explore at a very different pace.

8. Torre de Lapela

A few kilometres to the north, beside the river, the Torre de Lapela is all that remains of an old medieval castle that watched over the border. The imposing granite keep is one of the most striking military monuments in the municipality and an excellent excuse for a detour to the parish of Lapela, with the Minho always close by.

9. Marco do Bustavade and Serra da Anta, by Buggy

This is our favourite chapter. Above the town, the Serra da Anta hides mountain trails with breathtaking views over the parish of Anhões e Luzio and the entire Minho valley. The Marco do Bustavade is the natural viewpoint where the landscape opens up completely, and where our buggy tours make a stop. You can get there on foot or by car along dirt tracks, but the truth is that nothing compares to climbing the mountain at the wheel of a buggy, with the thrill of the trail and the reward of the view at the top. 10. Longos Vales Monastery

How to Plan Your Visit

Monção is about an hour and a half from Porto and half an hour from Vigo, which makes it perfect for a getaway. The historic centre can easily be explored on foot in half a day; set aside another half-day for the Caldas, the Palácio da Brejoeira or the Torre de Lapela, and save the best for last: a buggy tour at dusk, when the golden light falls over the valley.
