When Is the Best Time to Visit Monção? Seasons Guide

"When should I visit Monção?" It's probably the question we're asked most often before people book a buggy tour in Monção. And the honest answer from those of us who live here is this: there is no wrong time. Monção is a year-round destination, and every season has its own charm, spring paints the valley green, summer fills the town with festivals and river life, autumn smells of Alvarinho grape must and winter invites you to the hot springs and the Minho lamprey. The best time depends only on what you're looking for. This guide will help you decide, season by season.

Spring (March to May): the valley in bloom

If you ask the Bontour team what their favourite season for driving is, spring wins almost every time. The winter rains leave the landscape in an intense green that only the Minho knows how to produce, the temperatures are mild, perfect for being behind the wheel without too much heat, and the Alvarinho vineyards begin to bud, drawing the first hues across the hillsides. It's when the Serra da Anta is at its very best: firm trails, clean air and absolutely breathtaking views over the União de Freguesias de Anhões e Luzio and the Minho valley.

It's also the ideal time of year to walk or cycle along the Ecovia do Minho, beside the river, and to explore the historic centre, the medieval walls, the Porta do Salvado, the Porta do Sol, without the summer crowds. March and April can bring showers, admittedly, but May is usually a glorious month. If you're after nature, photography and tranquillity, come in spring.

Summer (June to August): festivals, the river and sunsets

Summer is Monção's high season, and for good reason. The days are long, the nights warm and the festival calendar is the richest of the year: the Festa do Alvarinho celebrates the wine that made the Monção e Melgaço sub-region famous, and the Festa da Coca, on Corpus Christi Thursday, sees Saint George and the Coca knight re-enact the battle between good and evil in the town's streets, a tradition you'll never forget.

The river Minho comes to life, with the riverside filling up in the late afternoon and Salvaterra de Miño lighting up on the other side. And it's in summer that our Sunset Experience reaches its peak: two hours of easy-level buggy driving, €140 (2-seater buggy) or €200 (4-seater buggy), with the start time adjusted to the time of year so we catch the golden light over the valley. Ending the day watching the sun dip behind the mountains, after a mountain trail, is one of the most beautiful memories our customers take away from Monção.

One important note: July and August get busy. If you're planning to come in summer, especially on festival weekends, book your buggy tour and accommodation well in advance. Our 2- and 4-seater buggies sell out easily at this time of year.

Autumn (September to November): harvest time

For wine lovers, there's no doubt about it: September is the month. It's the time of the Alvarinho grape harvest, when Monção's wine estates burst into activity, the air smells of grape must and the hillsides dress themselves in gold and copper. It's the perfect time to visit the Palácio da Brejoeira, the 19th-century neoclassical palace that is also an Alvarinho producer, with tours and tastings, and the Museu do Alvarinho, in the historic centre, to understand the grape variety and the history of Portugal's most celebrated vinho verde. And the buggy? It carries on, with an autumn landscape that is pure cinema: the warm colours of the mountain, the lower, softer light, the quieter trails. September and early October bring together the best of both worlds , still-mild weather and the excitement of the harvest. Winter (December to February): hot springs, lamprey and cinematic mists

The Monção winter is cold and damp, we're not going to pretend otherwise, but it has a charm all of its own. It's the season of the Termas de Monção, in the Parque das Caldas, where the warm mineral waters taste even better when it's cold outside. And it's the season of the Minho lamprey, the queen of the region's winter gastronomy: lamprey rice, lamprey à bordalesa, always accompanied by a good house red. For that alone, people drive for miles to come and eat here between January and March.

And yes, the buggy tours run all year round, subject to weather conditions. A winter tour has a different atmosphere: the mists that rise from the river and wrap around the mountain are as photogenic as at any other time of year, and there's a stillness on the mountain that summer never knows. So, when is the best time after all?

After so many tours in every season, our verdict is this:

• Spring (Mar–May): the best time for buggy tours, hiking and nature. Green landscapes, mild temperatures, fewer people.
• Summer (Jun–Aug): the season of festivals (Festa do Alvarinho, Festa da Coca), the river and the Sunset Experience. Book in advance.
• Autumn (Sep–Nov): the Alvarinho harvest in September, golden colours, wine tastings and peaceful trails. Spring and early autumn are, for us, the sweet spot for buggy + wine.
• Winter (Dec–Feb): hot springs, Minho lamprey and photogenic mists. The buggy carries on, subject to weather conditions.

If you have to pick just one: come in May or September. You'll get good weather, the landscape at its peak and the town at a perfect pace. But the truth is we've had customers won over in January - the right Monção exists in every month of the calendar.

A few quick tips from those of us who are here all year round:

• What to wear: in spring and autumn, dress in layers, the mornings are cool and the afternoons mild; always bring a windbreaker. In summer, light clothing, sun cream and water. In winter, a warm waterproof coat; for the buggy, comfortable clothes you don't mind getting dirty in any season.
• Bookings: in summer and in September (harvest), book tours, accommodation and restaurants in advance. The rest of the year there's more leeway, but we always recommend booking your buggy tour before you arrive.
